Concepts of nationalism and patriotism
in serbian political discourse: medieval,
modern, contemporary

The project “Concepts of Nationalism and Patriotism in Serbian Political Discourse: Medieval, Modern, Contemporary – CoNatPat” is being implemented with the support of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia. The project aims to offer a comprehensive, diachronic perspective on the concepts of nationalism and patriotism as constitutive elements of Serbian political discourse from the Middle Ages to the late twentieth century by investigating the ways in which belonging to a people and/or country was articulated in written evidence from the three main periods of Serbian history.

Previous research on these issues was undertaken individually and has as a rule been limited to a single epoch or a group of historical sources, thus making it difficult to establish either a diachronic or a full synchronic perspective. The ambition of the project team is to achieve both: on the one hand, by analyzing a considerable amount of period-specific source material and identifying period-specific features of the concepts in question; on the other hand, by working towards an understanding of processes and phenomena transcending particular periods and contexts.
